When you need a sweeper rather than a scrubber

Sweepers collect loose debris, grit and dust; scrubber dryers wash and dry sealed floors. Warehouse floors, yards, car parks and industrial hardstand usually need sweeping first, and sites with both loose debris and ingrained soil often need both machines.

Choosing a sweeper

• Area to be swept and the time available
• Indoor floor, outdoor hardstand, or both
• Debris type — dust, grit, packaging waste or heavier material
• Hopper capacity and where it can be emptied
• Dust control requirements in occupied or enclosed areas

Dust control

In enclosed spaces, sweeping without effective filtration simply redistributes dust. Filter condition and regular filter maintenance make more difference to the result than brush pressure in most facilities.

Cost considerations

Main brushes, side brooms and filters are the recurring consumables on a sweeper, alongside batteries or fuel depending on configuration. Budget for them from the start, and hold the items you replace most often so a stoppage lasts minutes rather than days.

Maintenance

• Empty and clean the hopper at the end of each shift
• Shake or clean filters at the interval specified for the machine
• Inspect main brush and side broom wear and adjust as required
• Check skirts and seals, which control dust as much as the filter does
